It was previously used clinically for treatment of osteoporosis in post menopausal women at a dose of 50 mg every three weeks. However, as the abused doses are normally 10-100 times the therapeutic dose, side effects such as breast enlargement, acne, erectile dysfunction occurs in men and increased body hair, alteration of the voice, reduction of the breasts etc. in women. In addition, long term use leads to cardiovascular and liver damage. Nandrolone is metabolised to 19-norandrosterone, the substance detected in doping tests.
