Doping cases in cycling since 2006


When Pat McQuaid turns over the presidency to Brian Cookson he can look back at eight years where the sport the federation governs has had more than 400 doping cases.

 

In the Anti-Doping Database we have registered 462 doping cases since 2006. In total we have registered 773 doping cases in cycling where some of the earliest ones are from 1968. The information prior to 2005 aren\'t as good as the information after 2005. There has been at least two large operations during this period - Operation Puerto and the Lance Armstrong / US Postal Pro Cycling investigation. EPO most used During close to eight year period we have registered 85 cases involving EPO and 42 involving testosterone. Italy has had 94 doping cases, while USA has had 51. We have registered 13 cases related to Tour de France - there can be more as some can have been registered as out-of-competition test before the competition. EPO is the most used prohibited substance in cycling. of the 773 doping cases in cycling, 143 cases involves EPO. 69 caught out-of-competition Since 2006, 69 athletes has been sanctioned after had their sample collected out-of-competition. EPO was involved in 27 of the cases. Italy had the most cases with 16, while Spain had 11. USA had nine athletes suspended. 46 of the athletes was suspended for two years. Four received a lifetime suspension, while four athletes was suspended for four years.
