Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group. Both men and women produce this hormone. The substance strengthen muscle tone and bone mass. Testosterone is produced by the testicles of men and the ovaries and adrenal system in women. In medicine testosterone is used in men and boys to treat conditions caused by a lack of this hormone, such as delayed puberty, impotence, or other hormonal imbalances. It is also used in women to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Chemically, testosterone is 17-beta-hydroxy-4-androstene-3-one.
